Thesis Statement

Your thesis statement should follow these rules:

  • Thesis Statements Should Be Arguable

Not Arguable: Heroin is bad for teenagers.

Arguable: At least 5% of the federal budget should be spent on teen drug prevention programs.

  • Thesis Statements Should Be Focused and Clear

Not Clear: Drug use is detrimental to society.

Clear: Illegal drug use is detrimental to society because it encourages violence.

  • Thesis Statements Should Be Defendable

You should be able to defend your argument with credible evidence. Click on the "Locate Information" tab of this LibGuide to locate evidence to support your argument.
